KRANKY

LAURENCE SHANET (“KRANKY”)

Laurence Shanet is KRANKY. Raised by wolves from an early age after a fluke curling accident, KRANKY was destined to become a director. Or a life coach. Whichever one gets more chicks, really.
After studying film at Johns Hopkins and NYU, KRANKY's advertising career migrated to the agency side, where he spent more than 10 years writing, producing and supervising award-winning commercial work for some of the world's top agencies, until they caught him at it.

As a director, KRANKY made an early mark by creating and directing the world's first high-profile commercial web film series for Pepsi, although the terms "viral", "webisode" and "bukkake" had yet to be invented. (His self-centered suggestion to call it "KONTENT" fortunately never caught on.)

He soon made a splash on the awards scene with commercial projects for Master Cabbie, Carvel Ice Cream and the Minnesota State Lottery, often incorporating bears, death and obscene gestures as recurring themes. As his client list has become larger and more prominent, he has maintained his clarity of vision by switching to a specially designed diet that consists solely of root vegetables, amphetamines and the remains of a disturbingly large carp that he caught accidentally while learning to wakeboard.

In addition to his work in advertising, KRANKY has been very active in the world of entertainment (and no, we aren't referring to his work as a "dancer"). Among other projects, he directed the Off-Broadway production of Vernon Church's "Connections", which won Best of CitySearch honors, and is co-creator of the animated series "Badtime Stories", currently in development. KRANKY is now available for commercial projects again due to a recent decrease in his medication, but we don't talk about that.

Despite the moniker, he is generally pleasant.
